skip the youth

Just a page in my sketch book featuring what was cut out from the sleeve for the book cover I'm designing using the fancy laser cutter.

knotty pine

Here are the next set of potential images for Angela Carter's Book of Fairy Tales, this time for a story about a woman who gives birth to the frog that later in life outwits everyone and marries a prince, and eventually becomes the most beautiful woman on earth.

Which colours do people like?

If anyone wanted to see the original biro drawings, here they are:

silver soul

Here are a few mash-ups of the hyena image I made a little while ago, I didn't really like the results the last time round so I don't think I'll be using these, at least not as they are. If I get time I'll draw a new hyena out to use. I quite like the effect on the portrait above though!

These combinations are quite jarring which is another reason maybe not to use them, probably too busy I would say. And again, in my opinion the compositions aren't that successful, although I do like the positioning of the claws over the teeth. Oh well, I had some fun messing around; the squiggly lines of colour were made by moving around a scan of some inky colours.

Actually, I kind of like the first combination image... but I'm still not sure if it'll make the cut.

just like honey

More edits of a previous illustration, fine tuning these at the moment. Ink and colouring pencil textures added and messed around with here, also got some double layering going on in one of them which I think makes it look kind of jarring and spooky, but I'm not sure if it works so well.

Here's the drawing as it was before. I still really like this, but it's gotta be edited somehow to fit with the other inky stuff... hmm.

blonde on blonde

More messing around with textures and such. This was all actually inspired by my printer running out of ink and generally messing up, the last images are just what it did by itself. I quite liked them and they inspired me to mess around some more with all these ink textures I've been doing. These images also aren't 100% finished, I need to tweak a few things here and there, depending on which one makes the cut.

What do people think of these? I think I like the first image but I'm not sure if it's too busy?

**Edit: I changed a few of the compositions slightly.

midnight city

I did some more messing around, and again, I can't really decide what to go for here, or whether to mess around some more. So, I would like everyone's opinions (again) please! Which image/effect is preferred?

All I was doing here was layering textures I made with inks and water colours into the images, and one of them is just a simple gradient.

The original image is below, if people still prefer this one that would also be useful to know. Thanks!

that's so raven

A thousand more variations of an image for you to look at (maybe not quite a thousand). Again, opinions or favourites from anyone would be useful. These illustrations are based on another story from Angela Carter's Book of Fairy Tales, in which a boy is trapped in the body of a raven. I think I'm going to do a few more variations of this image as I feel it isn't quite there yet, maybe.

Anyway, if you want to see the original biro drawings, here they are:

finally we are no one

Here are a couple of work-in-progress type things... I have a lot of different versions of this, but I don't like any of them, the images just don't fit together very well. I've come to the conclusion I'm probably going to have to draw another hyena to work with.

Anyway, this is based on a character in one of the stories in Angela Carter's Book of Fairy Tales. He's a hyena who's taken the form of a human being, a girl falls in love with him, marries him, and then he tries to eat her. Good times.

Don't pay too much attention to these, there should be some better versions up asap.

Here are the original biro drawings for those interested:
