just like heaven

Just a quick drawing I did earlier of Ebba. I had some free time as I'm currently waiting on the next list of events to draw for The Sting in the Tale festival. I was kind of trying out different black pens and different ways to use them without worrying about the result, but I think it looks okay. The blue stuff in the background is spray paint I had left over from repainting my bike, would this look better without it? Because I have a more simple, non-blue version too. The lyrics are from 'Just Like Heaven' by The Cure.

year one portfolio

Hey y'all, just to let you know I added a link on the side of this blog to a collection of 30 images from my first year of studying Illustration. I'll probably be editing this quite a bit, but it's there if anyone wants to see.

You can also see it here.

Because this has been quite a boring post, here's a cool illustrator to take a look at. Here name is Daria Hlazatova, click right there to get to her blog. Here are a couple of her drawings ~

The first of these two images is inspired by The Smashing Pumpkins, and the second by Joanna Newsom, so good stuff all around. If you haven't listened to these guys, here are a couple of good songs to get started on:

more stories

This week's event drawings for The Sting in the Tale festival. They are:
Circle of Tales
Don Quixote
Family Story Walk
Ghost Walks of Old Poole Town
Local Stories, Myths and Tales
Tales from the Islands
The Golden Goose
The Tortoise and the Hare

My hand hurts from too much intensive drawing, ouch.

storytelling

Some more The Sting in the Tale events drawings, I'm aiming for two a day, which is hard... they take longer than one would think. I have been successful in this until today, where I have failed and done none. Boo.

So the first drawing is for an event called "The Girl Who Became A Boy", the second drawing is for "Tales from the Red House" (an event set in a museum where the audience write their thoughts and experiences of the museum on postcards and they get worked into the story). The third is for "Stories Around a Fire" and the last one for "The Flaming Torch: Champion Olympic Myths and Legends". This one looks a lot better as you see it in the last version, but hey, they have to be upright. The train reference is about Charles Bennet, otherwise known as 'The Shapwick Express', because he was compared to a train because of his running achievements. Hence the train.

as you like it

Two more entries for The Sting in the Tale festival. The left one is for an event on Shakespeare's 'As You Like It' and features Rosalind (dressed as a very unconvincing male shepherd) and Orlando, with the words "all the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players" which is from a famous monologue in the play. Did you know that this particular play is the origin of the phrase "too much of a good thing"? I did not. The second drawing is for an event called 'The Dancing Fox', which is set in a forest (hence the trees), and there was mention of dream catchers in the event description as the fox is magical, so i added a dream catcher... yay!

the desolation of Smaug

I think it is high time I put some of Tove Jansson's work on here, my all time favourite illustrator (and author). She's most famous as mother of the Moomins, which- even though they're really kids books- are probably my favourite and most re-read books (I do love the books). Reading them as an adult you can really find a whole new set of messages in them, and even if you don't like the stories too much then the art is just amazing.

BUT! Instead of putting some of the Moomin art up, I've decided to include a few of Tove's illustrations for a version of J.R.R Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' (another amazing book). I only recently discovered she ever illustrated a version of this! Most happy. I hope you enjoy her interpretations of the characters and situations, caus in my opinion they're bloody brilliant.
