the canterbury tales

Here's another design for The Sting in the Tale festival of stories. It's to go with an event about The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, which is a collection of stories written in old English, told by a load of people as they go on a pilgrimage to Canterbury- so here we can see some of these people all talking and telling stories at once as they travel.

I made two versions of the drawing, as you can see. Which one is better? I can't decide. They're not too different, the first one has a few extra lines.

Again, no shading allowed here. You're gonna be seeing a lot of drawings similar to this over the next month or so (around 30), so I hope they're liked.

I hope life on earth is everything you remember it to be

Just a couple of sketchbook pages from a week long uni project called 'Visions of the Future'. We were meant to find some future-type quotes and illustrate them, etc etc. The first one was taken from 'Brave New World' by Aldous Huxley (great book), but originally from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'. It reads 'how beautious mankind is! Oh brave new world, that has such people in't!'. Just messing around with some typography, I've really been enjoying this type of thing lately. The second sketch was inspired by the quote 'I hope life on earth is everything you remember it to be', which is from the film Moon. Amazingly amazing film that everyone should see.

we're half awake in a fake empire

So here's a drawing of Lua (check out her blog). It's just a loose sketch made with a felt tip and fine liners, but I like how it turned out. The words she's speaking are lyrics from The National song 'Fake Empire', give them a listen, they're grrrrreat.

looking for astronauts (inspiration)

I am posting far too little of my work lately and far too many inspiration posts... at the moment I don't have my sketchbook/other work on me as it's being assessed, so I'll do some more scanning soon. Anyway, here is a bit of Juan Francisco Casas's work- they're all biro drawings! Insane I know, they look so life-like. This guy must go through so many biros.

some photographers

Here are a couple of photographers found online who are really inspiring. I think their pictures seem really natural and atmospheric, and have a lot of feeling behind them, and you should definitely check out their blogs (click the links) for more great work.

Also, here's a lovely song... you can never listen to enough Elliott Smith:

the sting in the tale

Here are my entries for a competition to be this year's illustrator for The Sting in the Tale festival, which is this really cool sounding festival of stories in Dorset. Everything had to be in black and white, without shading, using only black pens. Pretty neat, a nice challenge to try to cut out all shading. The first four strips are made in the format that, if I won, all the drawings would have to be in- and there would be around 35 to do before the end of April! Quite a lot, but I really enjoyed drawing all these. The booklet the winner would be illustrating would be printed around 20,000 times as well, so whoever wins gets published. Exciting times.

**Extra note- I WON! HUZZAH!

another inspiration post

Here are some more people to check out on the net. The first and last illustrators are recent discoveries for me, but I've liked the guy in the middle for a while. He draws everything on post-it notes! Pretty neat.

explosive drawing workshop

Here are a few photos from an 'Explosive Drawing' workshop I did in uni before Christmas. Basically, we stuck paper all over a room- floor, walls, everything- whacked an audio book in a CD player and illustrated the book while it was being read. The book we were illustrating was 'Her Fearful Symmetry' by Audrey Niffenegger (the same woman who wrote The Time Traveler's Wife). This workshop only lasted one day, and there were only a handful of people drawing, so I think it's kind of impressive we basically managed to cover the entire room in art. Obviously we only heard the first part of the book, but from what I gather it centered around the idea of ghosts and twins and such things. Because we weren't allowed to bring any reference material into the room, everything was drawn from memory or imagination, so you won't find too many realistic illustrations here. Anyway, it was a lot of fun, and encouraged me to draw in new ways. A pretty good experience overall, although of course not some of my best work :) Oh yes, and in the top two photos I'm the girl in the red jumper, sketching away.. my feet are also in the third photo.

Here are a couple of things I drew in the room, that other people have worked over and such. Fun Fun:
